The huge lounge has high cathedral ceilings, an open fireplace, and access to a secluded, tree-lined garden at the rear. There is a hallway library, and a well-appointed laundry, undercover parking for 2 cars and additional parking spaces for at least 3 other vehicles. There is also a self-contained unit, with separate bedroom and living-room, that may be utilized for extended family or business ventures, and is currently used as part of a B&B business. The view from the top deck of the house and its adjoining sunroom extends all the way to Mt Baw Baw
The Gardens
George Woolrich cleared a 10-acre block on this site in 1895, and later left half to each of his sons Ted and Jim as nursery businesses. Jim’s subsequently became remade as Cloudehill and Ted’s became Rangeview, now known as Woolrich. What attracted Rangeview’s current owners were the gardens themselves and the property’s sense of history: the irreplaceable hundred-year-old trees, the azalea maze established in 1923 and the cool shade of the mature rhododendron woods. They first cleared weeds, built drystone walls to protect the paths, had a team of arborists shape the trees to ensure their ongoing health, and then went about renovating the Edwardian-style cottage and the more-recently-built house. The work was primarily to provide a comfortable residence, but the refurbished cottage provided an opportunity to start a B&B business, which now yields a sizeable income. Wildlife, especially birdlife, is abundant, including King parrots, rosellas, lyrebirds, kookaburras, and magpies. There is always something to admire in the gardens, but Spring is particularly stunning, with swathes of camellias, azaleas and rhododendrons flowering across the hillside.
The Cottage
Woolrich Retreat is a private and peaceful Art Deco-inspired 2 bedroom, 3 bathroom cottage nestled amongst the gardens and offers a good income as an established 4½ star B&B. Rescued and renovated from Ted and Iris’s 1920’s cottage, it has beautiful high ceilings, fretwork, hardwood floors, leadlights and an open fireplace. There is a full kitchen, a secluded deck providing views across the stunning gardens to hills beyond, off-street parking for 2 cars, and a 21st-century addition: a 4-person Jacuzzi.
